Step 1 | Meet the Eligibility Requirements

Before you begin the process of obtaining your driver’s license in San Diego, you must ensure you meet the following eligibility requirements:

1. Be at least 15 1/2 years old for a provisional license, or 18 years old for a regular driver’s license.
2. Provide proof of identity & legal presence in the United States, and proof of California residency.
3. Complete a California driver’s education course (if under 18).
4. Obtain parental or guardian consent (if under 18).
5. Pass a written knowledge test.
6. Pass a vision test.
7. Pass a driving skills test.

Step 2 | Gather Required Documents and Forms

To apply for a California driver’s license, you will need to provide specific documents and forms to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Here’s a checklist of essential items:

1. Proof of identity and legal presence: You can use your valid U.S. passport, birth certificate, or permanent resident card to prove your identity and legal presence.
2. Proof of California residency: Utility bills, rental or lease agreements, or mortgage statements can be used to establish residency.
3. Social Security Number: You must provide your Social Security Number (SSN) or an acceptable alternative if you are not eligible for an SSN.
4. Completed application form: Visit the DMV website to complete the application or download and complete the Driver License or Identification Card Application form (DL 44 or DL 44C) in advance.

Step 3 | Take the Written Knowledge Test

Adults over 18 years old are not required to take professional driving lessons.  However, it is advised that adults follow the same advice given to teens who are required to practice for 50 hours and complete 6 hours of behind the wheel lessons with a state-approved driving school. Driving practice will ensure you are ready to pass the drive test successfully.

Step 5 | Schedule and Pass the Drive Test

Once you feel confident in your driving skills and have practiced enough, you can schedule a drive test with the DMV. During the test, a DMV examiner will evaluate your ability to operate a vehicle safely.
